A used bakfiets is a good buy if the frame, steering and box are sound, and an expensive mistake if they are not. Decide first between a two-wheeler (faster, narrower, harder to learn) and a three-wheeler (stable when stopped, wide, slower in corners), then check the box floor, steering play and, on electric models, the battery. Expect 500 euro for an older non-electric model and 2,000 euro or more for a recent electric Urban Arrow.
Two-wheel bakfietsen (Urban Arrow, Bakfiets.nl Cargobike, Workcycles Kr8, Riese and Muller Load) ride much like a long bike once you have practiced for an afternoon. They fit through bike path gates and are faster.
Three-wheelers (Christiania, Babboe Big and Curve, many Johnny Loco and Nihola models) stand on their own, which is easy with toddlers climbing in. They lean the wrong way in corners, are wide on narrow paths and are heavier. Test ride both before you decide which type to buy.
Wooden boxes rot at the floor and corners if the bike stood outside under a rain tent for years. Press the floor with your thumb; soft spots mean a new box. Foam boxes (Urban Arrow) can crack or dent. Check the bench, the seat belts and their buckles, and whether a rain tent (huif) comes along, since a new one costs 150 to 300 euro.
Most two-wheelers steer the front wheel through a rod under the box. Hold the front wheel between your knees and turn the handlebar: any clunk or free play means worn joints. Three-wheelers turn the whole box; check the pivot for play and rust.
Look closely at welds around the head tube and where the box meets the frame. In 2024 Babboe recalled a large number of its cargo bikes after reports of frame breakage. If you look at a Babboe built before then, ask whether it was inspected or repaired under the recall and ask for proof. Brakes should be hydraulic disc or roller brakes in good shape; a loaded bakfiets is heavy.
Most bakfietsen sold today are electric, and the better ones use a mid-motor, most often from Bosch or Shimano. Ask for a battery diagnostic and the charger, and test the bike on a bridge with someone in the box if you can. Front hub motors on budget three-wheelers can struggle with a full load and wind.
Cargo bike batteries work hard, so a five-year-old battery used for a daily school run may be near the end. Budget 500 to 900 euro for a replacement.
Families sell when the youngest is around five or six, often in late summer before school starts. That is a good moment to buy. Specialist cargo bike shops also sell used ones with a check and a short warranty, for a few hundred euro more. Search the brand name plus 'elektrisch' and narrow by distance, since you need to test ride it and riding one home can take a while.
Accessories add up, so note what is included: rain tent, child seats with belts, a baby seat adapter (maxi-cosi houder), a lock and a cover. A listing with all of them can be worth 300 to 500 euro more than the bare bike. A good frame lock plus a heavy chain lock is the minimum for something this expensive and this easy to spot.

Usually not. Plan to ride it home, or use a van or a courier that handles large bikes.
