Buying a used e-bike: battery, motor and price checks

The battery decides what a used e-bike is worth. A replacement costs roughly 450 to 800 euro, so ask for proof of its health before you agree a price, and make sure the charger and both keys come with it. A 3 to 5 year old e-bike with a mid-motor from Bosch, Shimano or Yamaha and a healthy battery usually sells for 900 to 1,600 euro.

Search terms Dutch sellers use

Mid-motor or hub motor

A mid-motor sits at the pedals and drives the chain. Bosch, Shimano Steps and Yamaha are the common ones on Dutch brands like Gazelle, Batavus, Sparta, Stromer and Riese and Muller. They feel natural, handle hills and wind well, and are easy to service at almost any bike shop.

A hub motor sits in the front or rear wheel. It is cheaper and quieter, common on budget brands and older models, and fine for flat commutes. Parts and diagnostics for lesser-known hub systems can be hard to find, which hurts resale value.

Checking the battery

Batteries lose capacity with charge cycles and age. A typical lithium battery is in good shape until roughly 500 to 1,000 full cycles, depending on the brand and how it was stored. Capacity is printed on it in Wh: 400, 500 or 625 Wh are common.

Ask the seller for a diagnostic printout from a bike shop, or a screenshot from the brand's app. Bosch and Shimano systems can show charge cycles and remaining capacity this way. No proof means you price in the risk of a new battery. On the test ride, start full, ride a few minutes in the highest assist and watch whether the charge indicator drops unusually fast.

At the pickup

Test it the way you will use it, including a short hill or bridge.

Theft and tuning

E-bikes are among the most stolen items in the Netherlands, so the stolen goods checks matter even more than for a normal bike. No charger, no battery key, or a battery from a different brand are red flags.

Avoid bikes advertised as 'opgevoerd' (tuned) to go faster than 25 km/h. A tuned bike is no longer legal as a normal e-bike on the road. A speed pedelec, which assists up to 45 km/h, is a separate category that needs a yellow number plate, insurance and a helmet, so check the paperwork if you buy one.

Battery tips that affect price

A bike stored in a cold shed with a flat battery all winter may have a damaged battery even with low mileage. Ask where it was kept. Also ask about the warranty: some brands extend the battery warranty for the first owner only, so it may not transfer.

If the battery is weak but the bike is otherwise good, a lower price can still make it a fair buy. Do the math: asking price plus a new battery should stay well below a new bike of the same quality.

Fair prices in 2026

Prices depend most on motor, battery, age and brand. Listings from 2019 and earlier with weak batteries are plentiful and should be cheap. Lease bikes returned after a contract sometimes appear in good condition with dealer service history. Search the brand, the motor and a year, for example 'Gazelle Bosch middenmotor 2022', to compare like with like.

Questions people ask

How do I check the battery of a used e-bike?

Ask for a bike shop diagnostic or the brand app screenshot showing charge cycles and remaining capacity. On the test ride, watch how fast the charge drops in high assist.

How long does an e-bike battery last?

Usually several years and many hundreds of full cycles, depending on brand and storage. A weak battery is the most expensive part to replace.

Is a used e-bike worth buying?

Yes, if the battery is healthy and the price reflects its age. Compare the price plus a possible new battery with a new bike.

What is a speed pedelec?

An e-bike that assists up to 45 km/h. In the Netherlands it needs a number plate, insurance and a helmet, and it cannot use every bike path.
