How to buy a used bike in the Netherlands

A good used city bike in the Netherlands costs about 120 to 300 euro, from a private seller who can show you the keys for every lock and lets you ride it around the block. Stick to Dutch city bike brands like Gazelle, Batavus, Sparta and Cortina, check the frame number against the police Stop Heling register, and walk away from anything cheap offered on the street.

Pick the type of bike

Most people need a city bike (stadsfiets): upright position, mudguards, chain guard, rack, lights and a frame lock. It works for commuting, groceries and rain. Choose between a herenfiets (men's frame, top tube) and damesfiets (women's or step-through, easier in a skirt or with a child seat). Anyone can ride either.

Gears: a single speed with coaster brake (terugtraprem) is fine for flat cities and the cheapest to maintain. A 3, 7 or 8 speed hub gear (Shimano Nexus, Sturmey Archer) handles bridges and wind. Hub gears are sealed and last for years; derailleur gears on a city bike need more care.

Brands and what they cost

Dutch city bike brands are built for daily use outdoors and parts are easy to find. Gazelle, Batavus, Sparta, Cortina, Union, Azor and Workcycles all keep their value. Cheap supermarket or webshop bikes under 300 euro new are worth very little used and rust fast.

Frame size matters more than brand. Typical sizes: 49 to 53 cm for 160 to 170 cm tall, 53 to 57 cm for 170 to 182 cm, 57 to 61 cm above that. You should be able to stand over the frame and reach the ground on tiptoes from the saddle.

Avoiding stolen bikes

Bike theft is common in Dutch cities, and many stolen bikes are resold online. Buying one, even unknowingly, can cost you the bike without a refund. Clear signs: a price far below similar bikes, no key for the frame lock, a seller who wants to meet on the street instead of at home, or a lock that has been cut.

Ask for the frame number (framenummer) before you go and check it in the police Stop Heling register. At the pickup, check that the number on the frame matches, usually stamped under the bottom bracket or on the rear dropout. A receipt or a registration card in the seller's name is a strong plus.

Test ride checklist

Ride it at least two minutes. These checks take about five more.

What repairs cost

Factor small repairs into your offer. At a Dutch bike shop, new tyre and tube is roughly 30 to 50 euro per wheel, a new chain 25 to 50 euro fitted, a brake service 20 to 40 euro, and a new rear wheel with hub gear can be 150 euro or more. A bike that needs both wheels redone is rarely a bargain.

Squeaks and a dull chain are normal. A bent rear wheel, a seized hub gear or rust holes in the frame are reasons to skip.

Where else to look

Bike shops sell used bikes with a few months of warranty, usually 50 to 100 euro above private prices. For students and new arrivals, that can be worth it. Local refurbishers and social projects also sell checked bikes at fair prices. For private listings, the trick is to search for size and gear type together, not only 'fiets'. Something like 'herenfiets 57 cm 7 versnellingen' cuts out most of the noise.

Questions people ask

How much should I pay for a used bike in the Netherlands?

A decent used city bike from a private seller is usually 120 to 300 euro. Under 60 euro is either a project or a warning sign.

How do I check if a used bike is stolen?

Ask for the frame number and check it in the police Stop Heling register. Make sure the seller has keys for every lock and lets you see it at their home.

What size bike do I need?

Roughly 53 to 57 cm frame for people between 170 and 182 cm tall. You should reach the ground on tiptoes from the saddle.

Should I buy a cheap bike from someone on the street?

No. Bikes offered on the street for 20 or 30 euro are very often stolen, and buying one is a crime.
