A used mower is a sensible buy for most Dutch gardens, but each type has its own trap: petrol mowers can hide engine problems, battery mowers can come with tired batteries, and robot mowers can be locked to the previous owner's account. Test it cutting grass and get the PIN and account release in writing.
A small city garden of up to about 100 square metres can be done with a manual reel mower (kooimaaier) or a corded electric mower. For larger lawns, a battery mower from Bosch, Makita, Stihl or Greenworks is quiet and low maintenance. Petrol mowers from Honda, Stihl (Viking), Husqvarna and Sabo make sense for big gardens and long grass.
Robot mowers (robotmaaiers) are popular in the Netherlands. They take a few hours to install and work best on a lawn without many obstacles.
For corded mowers, check the cable for cuts and the switch for a firm feel. For battery mowers, the battery is the expensive part. Ask how old it is, charge it fully and mow a strip of lawn for several minutes. If the runtime is short, a new battery may cost a large part of the price. Make sure the battery fits other tools you already own, which can make a body-only mower a good deal.
Husqvarna Automower, Gardena Sileno, Worx Landroid, Stihl iMow, Segway Navimow and Mammotion Luba are common. Most have an anti-theft PIN code and are linked to the owner's app account. A robot mower that is still linked or has an unknown PIN can be unusable, and stolen robot mowers are a known problem. Before paying, ask the seller to unlink it from their account and reset the PIN in front of you, and check that it starts with the new code.
Ask for the serial number and the original receipt. With Husqvarna and some others the serial can be checked with the dealer.
Garden owners often sell a mower together with a scarifier (verticuteermachine), hedge trimmer or grass trimmer. Scarifiers are used once or twice a year, so used ones are usually in good shape; check the blades or tines and the depth adjustment. Petrol trimmers and brushcutters are harder to judge: if it does not start within a few pulls when warm, walk away.
Prices drop in autumn, when people do not want to store a mower over winter, and rise in March and April. If you know what you want, such as a Husqvarna Automower for about 600 square metres with charging station and unlinked from the seller's app, describing it on vindje.com filters out listings for blades and boundary wire alone.

Yes, if the seller has removed it from their app account and resets the PIN in front of you. Otherwise it may stay locked.
Start it cold, watch for smoke, check the oil, the blade and the deck for rust, and test the drive and blade brake.
Often several years, depending on use. A worn battery shows as much shorter mowing time per charge.
