A used leather sofa can last another 15 years or fall apart in two, and the difference is almost always the material. Genuine full-grain or top-grain leather ages well; bonded leather and PU (polyurethane) peel within a few years. Learn to tell them apart before you pay, because sellers often do not know either.
Genuine leather (echt leer, rundleer, volnerf leer) is a hide. It wrinkles a little, warms up under your hand and develops a patina. Top-grain has a sanded and coated surface but is still a hide.
Bonded leather (gerecycled leer, bonded leer) is leather scraps glued to a fabric backing with a polyurethane coat on top. PU leather or kunstleer is plastic on fabric with no leather at all. Both look fine for a year or two, then crack and flake in sheets. Once that starts it cannot be repaired.
Listings that say leren look, lederlook or kunstleer are not leather. Listings that say leer without more detail could be anything. Look closely at photos of the seat edges and armrests: small flakes or white fabric showing through means bonded or PU.
Ask the seller for the brand and model. A sofa from Leolux, Montel, Gelderland, de Sede or Natuzzi is almost certainly genuine leather. A no-name sofa from a big furniture chain sold as leer for very little money new is often partly leather (seat and backrest) with split leather or PU on the sides and back.
You can usually tell in a minute with your hands and eyes.
Leather sofas are heavy, and the frame takes a lot of stress when people drop into them. Lift one end a few centimetres: it should feel rigid, with no twisting. Unzip a seat cushion if you can and look at the foam. Grey crumbling foam means the seat will sag soon.
Measure doors, stairwells and your car. A three-seater is often 200-230 cm long, and a hoekbank (corner sofa) usually comes apart in two or three pieces. Ask the seller how it splits before you arrive with a small van.
Dry, faded genuine leather is often recoverable with a cleaner and conditioner, and light cat scratches blend in over time. Deep cracks in the surface of a genuine leather seat can be recoloured by a specialist but cost money. Peeling bonded leather is a write-off: price it as if you will replace the sofa in a year.
Aniline leather (soft, no protective coat) marks easily and shows every drop of water. Some people love that look; if you have small children, a pigmented leather is easier to live with.
Before it goes into your living room, vacuum the seams and under the cushions with a brush nozzle. Clean the whole surface with a pH-neutral leather cleaner and a damp cloth, then apply a conditioner, testing both on a hidden spot first. Keep the sofa out of direct afternoon sun and at least a metre from a radiator, since heat dries leather and makes it crack.
If the seat cushions feel flat, an upholsterer can add a layer of new foam or a wrap of polyester fibre inside the existing leather cover. That is usually far cheaper than replacing the leather, and it makes an older sofa feel firm again.

Look at the underside or a seam: genuine leather has a suede-like fibrous back, while bonded and PU leather show a woven fabric. Irregular pores and fine wrinkles when you press it also point to a hide.
Not in a lasting way. The coating separates from the backing, and patches or paint only hide it for a short time.
Leather is easier to clean than fabric and does not hold dust mites the same way. Wipe it with a mild leather cleaner and check the cushion foam for smells.
It means leather look, so imitation leather. It is not leather.
