A used built-in oven or combi microwave (combimagnetron) is one of the easier appliances to buy second hand: few moving parts and easy to test. Get the niche size right, check what plug and power it needs, and test every heating mode before you pay.
A standard built-in oven (inbouwoven) fits a 60 cm high niche. A compact oven or combi microwave fits a 45 cm high niche; both are 60 cm wide. A combimagnetron combines a microwave with a hot-air oven and grill, popular in Dutch kitchens without space for two appliances. Steam ovens (stoomoven) and combi-steam ovens are also compact, 45 cm.
Measure the niche height, width and depth, plus the space for air at the back. Built-in ovens are fixed by screws through the front frame into the cabinet, so the frame size of the new unit should cover your opening.
Freestanding ovens and countertop combi microwaves need no niche at all, which is the easy option in a rental.
Most built-in ovens and combi microwaves have a normal plug and draw up to around 3.5 kW. Ideally they get their own group in the fuse box, especially if your induction hob is on the same circuit. A freestanding range (fornuis) with an induction or ceramic hob usually needs a perilex socket or a dedicated connection. Check the type plate and the plug before buying, and ask an electrician if you're unsure; don't improvise with extension cables.
Ask the seller to keep the oven connected. If it's been removed from the kitchen, ask them to plug it in somewhere so you can test it, or see a video of it running with the display on.
Bosch, Siemens, Neff, AEG, Miele and Atag are common in Dutch kitchens. Atag and Pelgrim are Dutch brands found in many new-build homes; spare parts are available. Pyrolytic self-cleaning saves a lot of scrubbing. Telescopic rails make heavy trays safer. A built-in meat probe is nice but most cooks manage without one.
Combi microwaves from Miele and Bosch hold their value. Very cheap combi microwaves with a weak grill often disappoint as ovens, so check the hot air function uses a proper convection fan, not just a grill element.
A used oven that looks dirty inside isn't a problem in itself; a pyrolytic model can clean itself in a few hours, and a normal enamel interior cleans up with soda and patience. What matters is the heating and the door. Before cooking, run the empty oven at 200 degrees for half an hour with a window open to burn off any residue. For a combi microwave, clean the cavity well first, because food splashes can scorch when heated by the grill.
Avoid ovens with a microwave that sparks or runs without heating, a cracked inner door glass, or rust inside the microwave cavity, because microwaves with internal damage can be unsafe. Also avoid units removed from a kitchen with the wires cut short and no plug, unless you'll have it connected professionally.
