A good used Windows laptop in 2026 has a processor that runs Windows 11, at least 16 GB of RAM, an SSD and a 1080p IPS screen. Former business laptops like ThinkPads, Latitudes and EliteBooks are often better buys than consumer models at the same price. Check the battery and make sure it is not locked to a company.
Free support for Windows 10 ended in October 2025, so you want a laptop that officially supports Windows 11. In practice that means an Intel Core processor from the 8th generation onward or an AMD Ryzen 2000 series or newer, plus TPM 2.0, which almost all such laptops have.
You can find the processor in Settings, System, About, or in the listing. An Intel i5-8250U is 8th generation; an i7-7700HQ is 7th and not supported. Older laptops can still run Linux well, but price them as such.
Processor names are confusing, but a few rules cover most of it.
Companies lease laptops for three or four years and then sell them in bulk. Lenovo ThinkPad T and X series, Dell Latitude 5000 and 7000 series and HP EliteBook 800 series are built to last, have good keyboards, and parts like batteries and keyboards are easy to buy. Many are sold on Marktplaats by refurbishers with a short warranty.
Consumer laptops at the same age are often thinner and prettier but have weaker hinges, cheaper screens and fewer spare parts.
Laptops from companies can still be tied to their management. If, after a reset, Windows asks you to sign in with a work account or shows the company's name, it is enrolled in Windows Autopilot or similar and you will not get past it. Also ask whether there is a BIOS password; a locked BIOS can block resets and upgrades.
The safe way to test: ask the seller to reset Windows before the meeting, then go through the setup yourself on the spot. A laptop that reaches the normal Windows welcome screen and lets you create a local or personal account is clean.
Run through these in ten minutes, with the charger unplugged for part of the time.
Search by model as well as by laptop: ThinkPad T14, Latitude 5420, EliteBook 840 G8. The model number tells you more than the brand. On vindje.com you can describe what you need, like a business laptop with 16 GB, a 1080p screen and Windows 11 under EUR 350, and the AI checks the specs in each description.
